A handsome and unusually well-proportioned English Mid-Victorian country house pedestal desk, dating to circa 1840–1860, constructed in warm, richly patinated pine and retaining its original green leather writing surface with gilt-tooled border decoration.
The desk features a substantial rectangular top with a molded pine perimeter surrounding the inset leather writing surface. The beautifully aged honey-golden pine displays the natural character, surface wear, and patination expected of a well-used 19th-century country-house piece.
The front is arranged as a traditional pedestal desk, with three drawers across the frieze and graduated drawers forming each pedestal, all retaining their original turned wooden knobs and keyholes. The central recessed knee space provides generous legroom and makes the desk highly practical for use as a writing or executive desk.
Of particular note is the fully finished reverse, which is fitted with false drawer fronts corresponding to the drawers on the front elevation. This unusual treatment gives the desk the appearance of a working desk from either side and allows it to be positioned freely within a room rather than against a wall.
