Description
A handsome example of early American craftsmanship, this American Classical cabinet, dating to circa 1840, embodies the refined architectural aesthetic that defined the late Federal and Classical periods. Constructed of richly figured flame mahogany, the cabinet displays beautifully matched veneers with exceptional depth and warmth, complemented by ebonized moldings that accentuate its clean, sophisticated lines.
The upper case is fitted with two dovetailed drawers featuring figured mahogany fronts and turned brass pulls. Below, a pair of paneled cabinet doors open to a spacious interior, ideal for storing table linens, barware, books, or household essentials. Flanking the doors are elegant brass-mounted engaged columns, a hallmark of the American Classical style inspired by ancient Greco-Roman architecture. The original working lock remains in place and is accompanied by a decorative tasseled key.
Raised on graceful tapered legs, the cabinet possesses a light, refined stance while maintaining sturdy construction. Measuring 25.75 inches wide, 14.5 inches deep, and 30.5 inches high, its compact footprint makes it exceptionally versatile as a side cabinet, entry cabinet, bar cabinet, bedside chest, or accent piece in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
The warm, naturally aged patina highlights the exceptional figuring of the mahogany and reflects nearly two centuries of careful preservation. Elegant proportions, restrained ornamentation, and superior craftsmanship make this a fine representative of American furniture from the Classical period.

- Overall, this American Classical figured flame mahogany cabinet presents very well and is in good antique condition, retaining an attractive, warm patina consistent with its circa 1840 age. Beautiful figured flame mahogany veneers throughout with rich color and a desirable, naturally aged finish. Structurally sound and stable, with drawers and cabinet doors operating properly. Brass-mounted engaged columns, brass hardware, and the original working lock are present; key included. The top exhibits scattered light surface scratches, finish wear, and minor age-related discoloration from nearly two centuries of use. There is a small veneer loss/chip to one rear corner of the top (shown in photographs), which is cosmetic and does not affect structural integrity or function. Minor edge wear, scattered nicks, and light rubbing to the case, consistent with age and careful use. The secondary wood back panel is original and shows expected age-related wear and oxidation. Interior is clean and suitable for immediate use. This cabinet has been well preserved, with honest wear that enhances its authenticity and character. The minor veneer loss at the rear corner is unobtrusive in normal display, as it is located toward the back of the cabinet.
