Pair of Italian Venetian Rococo Polychrome and Parcel-Gilt Hand-Painted Side Chairs, Early 20th Century
An exceptional pair of Italian Venetian Rococo Revival side chairs, crafted during the early 20th century and richly decorated in the celebrated Venetian tradition of hand-painted polychrome furniture. Finished in a soft celadon green with parcel-gilt reserves, each chair is adorned with finely executed floral bouquets framed by scrolling gilt ornamentation, creating an elegant balance between whimsical Rococo design and old-world craftsmanship.
The pierced backs feature serpentine stiles, shell-form crest rails, and shaped splats, each meticulously hand-painted with delicate floral sprays. Gracefully molded aprons continue the painted decoration, while cabriole legs terminate in subtle scroll feet joined by sinuous stretchers that reinforce the Rococo silhouette.
The painted surfaces display a beautifully mellow, naturally distressed patina acquired through decades of use, lending warmth and authenticity that cannot be replicated. The neutral upholstered slip seats provide a refined contrast to the richly decorated frames and can easily be recovered to suit a variety of interiors.

- Good antique condition consistent with age and use. The original hand-painted polychrome and parcel-gilt decoration exhibits attractive age-related wear, including expected paint losses, edge wear, surface abrasions, and scattered areas of exposed wood that contribute to a desirable antique patina. The upholstery is later and shows light discoloration and age-related wear. One seat frame exhibits an old corner repair with age-related separation and should be reinforced or professionally restored before regular use. Minor evidence of historic woodworm is present on the underside of one seat frame and appears inactive. The chairs remain structurally presentable overall and retain their original decorative character. This honest condition, together with the surviving original painted decoration, enhances their authenticity and appeal to collectors of Venetian painted furniture.
