Description
A striking and highly architectural Victorian ebonized display side cabinet, retailed by the esteemed London firm Edwards & Roberts, circa 1870. Distinguished by its dramatic ebonized finish, refined gilt decoration, and unusually shallow proportions, this cabinet exemplifies the sophisticated historicist and Aesthetic Movement–influenced furniture produced and retailed by leading London cabinetmakers and dealers during the late 19th century.
The long, elegant case features a central clear-glass door enclosing a display compartment, flanked by open shelving and framed by finely executed gilt female caryatid figures. Delicate gilt line inlay and architectural moldings accent the deep black ground, while the contrasting warm-toned wood top provides visual balance and reinforces the cabinet’s formal, architectural character. The stepped base and substantial lower plinth further enhance its monumental presence despite its relatively shallow 14-inch depth.
A surviving Edwards & Roberts paper label to the reverse provides important provenance and situates the cabinet within the distinguished retail history of this influential London firm. Edwards & Roberts was among the foremost Victorian furniture houses, renowned for both the manufacture and retailing of high-quality historicist and revival furniture.
