A handsome English Regency writing table, dating to circa 1830, distinguished by exceptionally figured rosewood veneers, elaborate brass wire inlay, and substantial brass corner mounts. The rectangular top is beautifully framed and fitted with inset panels that emphasize the rich, naturally varied grain of the rosewood.
The frieze incorporates two drawers, each decorated with finely executed scrolling foliate brass inlay and fitted with recessed brass campaign-style pulls. Matching brass corner mounts protect the upper corners, while additional brass-inlaid scrolling ornament continues down the front supports, creating a particularly cohesive and sophisticated decorative scheme.
The desk is supported by broad paneled slab ends, with matching figured rosewood surfaces and finished backs, allowing the piece to be positioned attractively in a room without requiring placement directly against a wall. The architectural form, restrained Regency proportions, exotic rosewood, and extensive brass ornament combine to give the table an unusually luxurious character.
The underside and drawer construction exhibit traditional period cabinetmaking techniques, including hand-cut dovetailed joinery and solid timber components, consistent with an early 19th-century English manufacture.
