English George III Sheraton Period Inlaid Mahogany Sideboard With Original Removable Stage Back, Circa 1800 is an expressive piece with both visual beauty, commanding serving surface, and practical storage and versatility, with a removable superstructure allowing the piece to be used as a traditional stage-back sideboard or in a lower, more streamlined configuration.
* Constructed from beautiful mahogany and polished finish, with brass details and inlaid lines that trace the perimeter of the top
* Long, rectangular serving surface with projecting edge
* Removable rear stage back with narrow upper shelf and three shallow cabinet sections
* Stage back incorporates three rectangular figured-mahogany fronts, each outlined with contrasting string inlay
* Small round brass knobls secure upper compartments, with shallow storage
* Broad lower cased features three aligned drawers, each fitted with a brass keyhole escutcheon and a circular brass ring pull mounted on a decorative backplate
* Key with decorative tassel suspends from the center drawer
* Slender square legs extend directly from the case and taper gradually toward spade-form feet.
* Front corner stiles are ornamented with narrow inlaid reserves
* Drawer construction features hand-cut dovetail joints and darkened secondary timber
* Removable stage back appears to be secured through concealed or inset metal fittings visible along its lower edge and the corresponding upper surface of the sideboard. This arrangement permits the superstructure to be detached, broadening the piece’s placement possibilities.
* When displayed with the stage back, the sideboard has a formal, tiered silhouette suited to a dining room, library, or entrance hall. Removed, the lowercase would offer a quieter, more linear profile while retaining the same expansive serving surface and drawer storage.
* Good antique condition with visible wear, surface variation, and evidence of prolonged use consistent with its stated period. (See photo details) One close view of the stage-back framing shows a small filled area near an inlaid border. The rear boards and legs also show minor age-related surface wear. (See all photos above for visual condition details)
