Description
A charming late 18th-century French Louis XVI provincial petite writing table, dating to circa 1790, crafted in richly patinated walnut. The compact rectangular top retains an authentically aged surface with extensive natural wear, historic marks, and character accumulated over centuries.
The table is distinguished by its finely carved frieze, incorporating floral rosette and foliate ornament with traces of gilt highlighting, supported by four square, tapering legs deeply fluted in the characteristic Louis XVI manner. The architectural treatment of the leg capitals and carved apron demonstrates the refined Neoclassical vocabulary of the period while retaining the robust, individual character associated with provincial French craftsmanship.
The single drawer provides useful storage while maintaining the table’s elegant, restrained proportions. The hand-worked construction, irregularities, historic repairs, and naturally distressed surface contribute substantially to its authenticity and antique character.
